420: Let’s Sort Out the Facts from the Myths

420 CBD Better Days

You might have heard the number “420” floating around, in the run-up to April 20th. It’s become a pretty big deal in cannabis culture, but where did it all come from? There are some cool stories and some straight-up myths about this number. Let’s dive in and see what’s what!

(Big heads up: This blog post is just for sharing information about the history and stories behind 420. It’s not encouraging or promoting anything that might not be legal or safe for you. Always make sure you know the rules where you live!)

The Real Deal: The “Waldos” and 4:20 PM

Okay, so here’s the story that seems to be the most likely truth, backed up by lots of people who’ve looked into it (check out those links you gave me!).

Back in the 1970s, in California, there was a group of high school friends who called themselves “the Waldos.” They heard about a patch of cannabis growing in a nearby forest. They made a plan to meet up after school, at 4:20 PM, by a specific statue at their school, to go on a treasure hunt for this secret stash.

Even though they never actually found the magical cannabis patch, the time 4:20 became their secret code word for anything related to cannabis. They’d say things like “420 Louis” to each other, and it just kind of stuck within their group.

The Myths: Cool Stories, But Not Quite True

Over the years, some really interesting (but not quite accurate) stories popped up about where 420 came from. Here are a few of the most popular myths:

  • It’s a police code for cannabis: This is a really common one, but it’s not true! Different police departments use all sorts of codes, and there’s no widespread code “420” for cannabis-related incidents. It makes a cool story, though!
  • It’s Bob Marley’s birthday or death date: Nope, neither of these is correct. Bob Marley was a huge icon, but his special days aren’t linked to 420.
  • It’s the number of chemical compounds in cannabis: While cannabis does have lots of different compounds, the number isn’t 420.

420 Today: A Global Celebration

So, even though the origin story is about a group of friends and a time, 420 has grown into something much bigger! April 20th (or 4/20 in the American date format) is now like a worldwide “cannabis Christmas” for many people.

You’ll see gatherings, events, and lots of talk about cannabis on this day. It’s become a symbol for the cannabis culture and, for some, a call for changes in laws around cannabis.

A Little Treat for You!

To add a bit of fun to the 420 vibes, here’s a special code you can use:

33% discount Code: 420

(Please remember this code has a limit of one use per person and isn’t valid on hash or extracts)

So, there you have it! The real story of the “Waldos” meeting at 4:20 PM, some of the fun myths that have popped up, and how it’s become a global thing. It’s pretty interesting how a simple meeting time between friends can turn into such a well-known number!
